Grinding teeth: what you need to know
Teeth grinding can be caused by a variety of reasons, including stress, anxiety, and sleep problems, and can become exacerbated through the consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and recreational drugs, as well as prescription medication like SSRI (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitor).
The masseter muscle, used in chewing, when overexercised, can cause a wide or square-looking jaw. This can be a problem for women, who may feel that their face looks too masculine, and wish to have a more rounded, feminine look.
Our medical professionals use Botox for teeth grinding as when injected into specific muscles, it relaxes them to ensure relief from chronic clenching or grinding. Botox can also soften the contours of the face to reduce a widened jaw.

How to stop grinding teeth?
1. Mouth guard for teeth grinding: A mouthguard can be worn at night to protect your teeth from grinding. It can also help you become more aware of the grinding and stop the habit.
2. Reduce stress: Stress is a common cause of teeth grinding. Try to identify the source of your stress and find ways to manage it, such as exercise, meditation, or therapy.
3. Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Caffeine and alcohol can increase the likelihood of teeth grinding, so try to limit your intake of these substances.
4. Relax your jaw muscles: Before bed, try to relax your jaw muscles by placing a warm washcloth on your cheek or doing some gentle jaw stretches.
5. Get enough sleep: A lack of sleep can contribute to teeth grinding, so make sure you are getting enough restful sleep each night.
Botox for Teeth Grinding
At PHI Clinic, we use Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) to address this condition. This treatment takes 20 minutes to administer and is temporary (lasting 3 to 4 months) so will require regular top ups to maintain, but results are noticeable between 2 and 5 days after treatment. As a result of jawline Botox, patients comment on their jaw feeling more relaxed, getting a better night's sleep as a result.
